This tasting over an extended lunch in the Restaurant Rössli in Bad Ragaz (link) was organized by Roger Bischof and Roger Zysset of Secli Weinwelt (link) who typically host 3-4 exclusive Champagne blind tastings per year. Wines were served in flights of four. I always like these thoughtfully curated events of Roger, both from a hedonistic and learning aspect. This lunch was not different. The wines have shown exceptionally well, accompanied by wonderful food. Noteworthy was the incredibly high level of all the wines that were served. The consistency of these benchmark wines over two vintages was impressive.

We met at Smith & de Luma on the 26th of June 2024, on a beautiful summer evening, a fitting backdrop for a Champagne tasting. Food pairing was kentucky style chicken with french fries, providing adqequate richness for the fresh 2008 vintage.
2008 is hailed as one of the great Champagne vintages, celebrated for its exceptional quality and potential for long aging. This vintage is among the other recent standout years like 1996, 2002, and 2012, each with its unique characteristics. Krug Clos du Mesnil – 1979-2006 Complete vertical tasted blind
After Covid the yearlong Covid hibernation in Singapore one of Asia’s largest collector organized this fabulous «revenge tasting» at his home. What generosity given the rarity and cost of these bottles. I only recently started tasting and comparing Champagne in a serious way and if I look at my 200+ tasting notes, Philipponnat Clos des Goisses, Krug Grande Cuvee and Egly-Ouriet BdN have emerged as my favorites. Thus, I am not (yet?) a Blanc de Blancs guy. Even more so I was looking forward to this tasting to learn more. Here are my takeaways (all bottles were decanted and served blind in random flights of three to four) to 12 invited guests, friends, MWs, people form the trade. Such are the relationships of this collector that Krug’s CEO Margareth Henríquez also made an appearance on Zoom, giving us some more background on the wine before the tasting started.

Die 5 ha Weinberge werden nach den Grundsätzen der biologischen Landwirtschaft bewirtschaftet. Pestizide werden sogar seit 2010 überhaupt nicht mehr verwendet.
