Col Vetoraz
No Prosecco, exclusively Valdobbiadene

When a producer is so proud of its terroir that it removes the word “Prosecco” from its bottles…

The Rebellion in the Bubbles

Mention Prosecco at a dinner party and watch the room divide. Half the guests will smile – it’s the wine of aperitivo hour, of lazy summer afternoons, of Aperol Spritz by the canal. The other half will quietly raise an eyebrow. Too sweet. Too industrial. Supermarket fizz dressed up in Italian sunshine.

Both sides are right – and that is precisely the problem Col Vetoraz set out to solve.

Vignamaggio
Where the Medici Vines Still Grow

Vignamaggio (link) stands as one of Chianti Classico’s most layered and historically resonant estates – a polycultural property of over 400 hectares nestled between Greve and Panzano, where winemaking has continued uninterrupted since at least 1404. Spanning roughly 65–70 hectares of active vineyard across sharply distinct micro-zones, the estate marries seven centuries of agricultural continuity with a rigorously modern commitment to organic polyculture and terroir-driven winemaking. The result is a portfolio of unusual range and coherence: from vibrant, high-altitude Sangiovese to structured international single-varietals and a benchmark Gran Selezione capable of decade-long aging.

Quiet Altitude in the Hills of Farra di Soligo

Some wines tell their story even before the first sip. With La Farra (link), this begins the moment you see the bottles – their quiet, almost ascetic elegance in black, blue and grey. But the real moment arrives when you open the bottle and the first sip makes the steep hills of Farra di Soligo tangible.

I recently had the three bottles on the table – Extra Dry, Brut and Extra Brut from the Rive di Farra di Soligo – and was immediately captivated. Instead of the usual light, fruity Prosecco cliché, something deeper unfolded: a clear, mineral freshness carried by fine structure and vibrant acidity that lingers long on the palate. It felt like a subtle counterpoint to what many understand by Prosecco: not loud, not sweetish, but precise, elegant and full of origin fidelity.
