Capalbio, June 2026 – Tenuta Monteti (link) is a wine estate in the southern Tuscan Maremma, near Capalbio. Founded in 1998 from the pioneering project of Gemma Bracco e Paolo Baratta, supported from the very beginning by consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini, it is today run by the founders‘ daughter Eva Baratta and her husband Javier Pedrazzini. The estate covers 142 hectares, in a small valley sheltered by the Monteti hill and open to the sea breeze. Here, the 30 hectares of vineyard are worked as “30 times one hectare”: every parcel is monitored, harvested, vinified and aged separately, as part of an ongoing process of research shaped by precision, sustainability and a distinctive sense of place.
A Pioneering Choice in the Southern Maremma
The story of Tenuta Monteti began in the late 1990s, when Gemma e Paolo Baratta, after years spent searching across Tuscany, identified a small valley in the first hills of the southern Maremma. In an area then still far from the main routes of high-quality viticulture, their choice took on a pioneering character from the very outset, fully embracing the freedom of starting from scratch, with no pre-defined production model, and listening to the soil, the climate and the landscape in order to forge an identity of their own.
A Sheltered Valley, 15 Kilometres from the Sea
Today, the property extends over 142 hectares, of which 30 are planted to vine and 20 to organically farmed olive groves. The rest is made up of woodland, open fields, gardens and rose gardens, in a landscape that remains deeply wild, where Mediterranean scrub, hills, light and sea breeze define the estate’s production context. The Monteti hill, which gives the estate its name, shields the vineyards from the direct winds of the Mediterranean and allows the breeze to move constantly through the valley, supporting healthy vines and balanced grape ripening.
A Parcel-based Method: “30 Times One Hectare”
From the very beginning, Tenuta Monteti has built its work on a rigorous parcel-based method. The 30 hectares of vineyard are regarded as “30 times one hectare”: every plot is observed, monitored, harvested, vinified and aged separately, so as to understand its character and accompany its expression with precision. The winery, completed in 2004, the year of the first harvest, was designed in keeping with this vision: sunk two-thirds underground, surrounded by native flora, integrated into the landscape, conceived for gravity-fed working and separate plot-by-plot vinifications.
Family Continuity
Since 2010, Eva Baratta, daughter of the founders, and her husband Javier Pedrazzini have led the estate, carrying forward the original project with a growing focus on agronomic precision, sustainability and the stylistic definition of the wines. Over the years, the work in the vineyard and in the winery has been progressively refined: precision farming, targeted management of individual plots, manual grape selection, separate vinifications and research on wood varieties all contribute to a common goal: to produce distinctive, tailor-made wines, capable of expressing the Maremma of Capalbio through balance, depth and elegance.
Certified Sustainability
Sustainability is an integral part of this journey. Since 2017, Tenuta Monteti has held the V.I.V.A. “Sustainable Viticulture” certification (link) from the Italian Ministry of the Environment, covering the entire production process — not only the vineyard but also the winemaking. Alongside this sits the SQNPI Sustainable Quality certification (link). The production of organic extra virgin olive oil completes an agricultural vision that regards vineyards, olive groves, woodland and fields as interconnected elements of the same ecosystem.
Three Wines, an Essential Range
The wine range is deliberately essential, evidence of the estate’s focus on research and the highest quality. Monteti (link) and Caburnio (link), born with the first vintage, are conceived from the outset as two distinct wines rather than as first and second wine: the former linked to the depth of the woodland and the allure of Petit Verdot; the latter to the sunny character of the Maremma and the Mediterranean scrub. In 2014 TM Rosé (link) was introduced to complete the estate’s dialogue with its coastal landscape. Three wines, all Toscana IGT, built each year around their leading grape varieties without fixed formulas, interpreting both the character of the vintage and the evolution of the individual parcels.
