Match Play: Vieux Château Certan vs. Château Figeac

We met on the 2^nd of September at the home of one of Switzerland’s most prolific Bordeaux collectors to see how these two Châteaux compare to each other. As always Jean-Marc Quarin (link) led through the evening. The wines were served blind in flights of four. What connected them were two distinct features: The high percentage of Cabernets (Sauvignon and Franc) in their vineyard and their location bordering Château Cheval Blanc where the soil consists of a good portion of gravel next to the more common clay and limestone soils of the right bank.

Tenuta Monteti – “We don’t like the excess of roundness”

I sometimes find myself struggling with the ripeness and the lack of acidity in some of the wines of the Tuscan coast. Although technically well made, their warmth, elevated alcohol content, low acidity, and use of ‚international‘ grapes such as Bordeaux blends can sometimes make them seem interchangeable. Additionally, global warming hasn’t been favorable for these wines. Usually, I am more drawn towards wines that show a sense of place, a vision and have a soul and freshness. Tenuta Monteti (Link) is a great example of a winery that embodies all these virtues, while avoiding stepping into the trap of being over-complicated or too intellectual.

Die Strassen sind überfüllt, hier und da heizen Guggenmusik-Gruppen die Stimmung an, dort kann sich das begeisterte Publikum mit lokalen Spezialitäten wie den unvermeidlichen Jambon persillé und Oeufs en Meurette stärken oder noch die lokalen Biermarken verkosten.
