Domaine Michel Niellon
Chassagne’s Quiet Mastery – The 2024 Vintage Revealed

Domaine Michel Niellon (link) stands as one of the undisputed benchmarks for white Burgundy , particularly in Chassagne-Montrachet, where it has long been regarded -alongside Ramonet- as the reference point for the appellation’s signature style: rich, textured, and profoundly mineral-driven Chardonnays that combine opulence with tension and remarkable aging potential.

Founded in the mid-20th century by Michel Niellon (1934–2020), who began working alongside his father Marcel in 1957 and bottled his first wines in the 1960s, the Domaine has remained a small, family-run jewel: just over 7–8 hectares of prime holdings, focused almost entirely on Chassagne-Montrachet with exceptional parcels in top 1er Crus (Clos Saint-Jean, Les Vergers, La Maltroie, Champgains) and coveted slices of the Grand Crus Chevalier-Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet.

Since Michel’s passing in 2020, the Domaine has seamlessly transitioned under three generations of the family. Son-in-law Michel Coutoux (joined in 1991) continues to oversee vineyard management and overall direction, while granddaughter Lucie Coutoux has taken the lead in winemaking and representation -frequently hosting tastings and sharing insights on recent vintages. Nephew Matthieu Bresson also contributes actively to the Domaine work. This collaborative dynamic preserves the Domaine’s traditional minimal-intervention philosophy while bringing subtle refinements in finesse and energy, as evidenced by the strong praise for the 2024 release.

In an era of rising interest in Chassagne’s distinctive whites, Niellon (link) remains a cult favourite among collectors: allocation-only, consistently high-scoring, and capable of evolving beautifully for 15–30+ years. This report explores why Chassagne-Montrachet deserves more attention, what sets Niellon apart, and the current wines emerging from this historic address.

Why Niellon?

In Chassagne-Montrachet -a village whose whites deserve far more spotlight than they often receive-Domaine Michel Niellon stands as one of the true reference points, frequently cited alongside Ramonet as the benchmark for the appellation’s distinctive style: rich, textured, mineral-driven Chardonnays that marry opulence with tension and profound aging grace.

The Domaine’s credentials are immediately compelling. At just over 7–8 hectares, it remains a tiny, family-owned jewel with an exceptional portfolio of holdings: prime parcels in top 1er Crus such as Clos Saint-Jean (a flagship often described as muscular and complete), Les Vergers, La Maltroie (dense and clay-influenced), Champgains, and others, plus highly coveted slices of the Grand Crus Chevalier-Montrachet (the Domaine’s crown jewel, commanding collector prices and mid-90s+ scores) and Bâtard-Montrachet. These sites, meticulously farmed without herbicides and with a „raisonnable“ (sustainable/reasoned) approach, deliver concentration, ripeness, and a signature stony-mineral edge that captures Chassagne’s best.

Founded by Michel Niellon (1934–2020), who began alongside his father Marcel in 1957 and bottled his first wines in the 1960s, the Domaine has built a legendary reputation for consistency over decades. Michel’s meticulous, low-intervention philosophy -whole-cluster pressing, minimal settling, modest new oak (20–30% across the range), long barrel élevage, and bottling just before the next harvest- has produced wines that evolve beautifully for 15–30+ years, often gaining contemplative depth and smoky complexity with time.

The Wines

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 2024

An invitation to journey through the coming years, an enticing nose, open, rich, delicious, with beautiful concentration and scents that leave no one indifferent. Very nice fruitiness that develops over time. Full-bodied, elegant, flavourful palate, pure delight at a high level. The fruit is beautifully perceptible here and asserts itself right through to the finish, while the acidity develops. Definitely a success that we would like to taste again in seven or eight years. 17.75-18/20 (92-93/100). The family owning the winery was pleasantly surprised by a bottle from the 1962 vintage, which was opened on 5 October 2025…

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean 2024

The Domaine-owns different parcels at the top of the slope (prime exposure, good drainage) and in the lieu-dit Rebichet. On the first ones the vines are around fifty years old and on the Rebichet they are four years old.

A true Chassagne with an impressive, promising, complex and profound bouquet. Clos Saint-Jean at its best despite the circumstances of the vintage. Exquisite, pure and precise scents of stone fruit, mirabelle plums, nectarines, peaches, white flowers and spices emanate from the glass, while time will reveal further components. The palate is every bit as impressive as the nose. Full-bodied, juicy, pure, harmonious, mineral, beautifully complex, needs plenty of time, the acidity is perfectly integrated and accompanies the juice through to the long finish. 18-18.25/20 (93-94/100).

Chevalier-Montrachet (Grand Cru) 2024

The vines are between 60 and 65 years old.

Everything is beautifully balanced in this complex, distinguished, captivating wine, which is incredibly deep, powerful, mineral and perfectly salty. It deserves the time to be savoured, allowing each possible interpretation to be explored, whether it be the uncompromising reverberation of the appellation’s terroir or its extreme purity, reminiscent of the laser-like precision of a goldsmith’s work. The nose, which will obviously develop, offers delicious scents of subtle lemon cream, white fruits and flowers. The toasting of the wood is noticeable but will integrate perfectly. The palate is very delicate yet powerful, showing great class, accompanied by superb aromas in harmony with the bouquet, although the minerality is clearly perceptible, and a refreshing acidity that reveals itself to be very salty in the lingering finish. 18.5+/20 (95+/100).
