Nothing quite compares to the magic of a well-aged Bordeaux. But not all vintages are created equal and the journey to the pinnacle varies greatly, influenced by nature and winemaking decisions, making regular vintage reassessments essential. Our circle of wine enthusiasts has established a tradition of revisiting Bordeaux vintages at 10 and 20 years, courtesy of a collector in Switzerland with an enviable cellar. This year, we delved into the 2004 vintage. We tasted 33 red wines from various appellations. Bottles were not decanted, tasted, and scored blind.

This was our inaugural tasting of a newly launched series of 6-8 blind tastings per year (Link) where we announce the date and theme a few months in advance and invite wine lovers to bring a bottle to the theme. If someone hasn’t got a bottle, we can provide one from our cellars. The goal is to discover, learn, discuss and spend a great time. We keep it deliberate, but informal. Our current event location is Smith & de Luma (Link), which provides a great athmosphere with its classical Tudor style deco.

Eine Presseschau des 2022er Jahrgangs zeigt, dass wir offenbar einen grossen Jahrgang haben. Das Jahr war sehr heiss und trocken und soll trotzdem nicht überladene Weine hervorgebracht haben. Also keine Erzeugnisse im Stil des Jahrgangs 2003. Das wäre in der Tat eine schöne Überraschung.

Der Chateau d’Yquem 2011 wurde nicht en primeurs angeboten. Also ein zusätzlicher Grund, um ihn jetzt zu verkosten. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung „Rote Grössen aus Pomerol, Edelsüsse Legenden aus Sauternes“, welche die Zeitschrift Vinum am 12. Juni 2014 im Zürcher Kongresshaus organisierte, konnten sogar zwei Jahrgänge verkostet werden: 2009 und 2011. Wir bewerten hier den 2011er.
