Among the great vineyards of Barolo, a new space to experience the signature hospitality of Bersano
Nizza Monferrato, September 2025 – Located in one of the highest and most scenic areas of the Langhe, Badarina stands out for its position and personality. Here, Bersano’s Barolo Badarina takes shape, the winery’s emblematic wine, capable of expressing both the strength of tradition and a forward-looking vision. Thanks to its historic connection with the cascina – purchased in 1968 and registered by Bersano (link) as a trademark even before the creation of the MGA – the winery benefits from a special authorization that allows vinification at its headquarters in Nizza Monferrato, while maintaining full belonging to Serralunga d’Alba.
The purchase of Cascina Badarina (link) by Arturo Bersano, one of the pioneers of Barolo and the Langhe, was a bold and visionary choice at the time: investing in a high “bricco,” just under 500 meters, at a time when such altitudes were considered marginal. Over time, this cru has become one of the most highly regarded, thanks to its southeast-facing vineyards, which enjoy optimal exposure and offer one of the clearest interpretations of Barolo.
“For my family, Badarina has never been just a farmhouse—it has always carried a special meaning. It was one of my grandfather’s favorites “cascine”: he loved going up there, stopping among the rows, a quietly taking in the view – as if the landscape gave him peace and inspiration. I shared many moments with him there, moments that nourished my bond with this land and with his memory. During harvest, Badarina turns almost poetic. The vineyard stirs with life, red crates lining the rows, the air thick with energy and anticipation. It’s a scene that tells a deeper story – not just of work, but of tradition, of gestures passed down through generations, turning grapes into emotions.” says Federico Orione, fifth generation of Bersano.
Barolo Badarina by Bersano
Cascina Badarina gives life to two benchmark labels: Barolo Badarina and Barolo Badarina Riserva. Both stem from rigorous viticulture and careful winemaking, starting with hand-harvesting in small crates. In the cellar, each bunch is checked one by one using cutting-edge optical and mechanical selection systems, including manual sorting on conveyor belts and Pellenc technology to eliminate imperfect parts, ensuring only pristine, top-quality grapes are processed.
Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel involves prolonged maceration on the skins and frequent pump-overs, to extract color, tannins, and aromatic complexity in a balanced way. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines rest on the fine lees to encourage malolactic fermentation and gain structure and roundness. Barolo Badarina ages for a minimum of 48 months in large casks, tonneaux, and barriques, followed by additional time in bottle, while Barolo Badarina Riserva continues for at least 60 months in oak followed by a further 12 months in bottle. These patient ageing times allow the full power and elegance of the Serralunga terroir to shine, yielding wines of longevity, depth, and unmistakable character.
“Bersano’s Barolo Badarina wines are made to age – wines that evolve over time without losing freshness, gaining in depth and complexity. This is our idea of Barolo: a great red that balances elegance, purity, and personality, offering a contemporary expression of finesse and structure, always with drinkability in mind. For over fifty years, this Barolo has represented one of our flagship labels, contributing to building Bersano’s identity and reputation both in Italy and abroad, and standing at the top of our portfolio among the most important and representative wines,” explains Federica Massimelli, CEO, who leads Bersano.
Today, Barolo Badarina finds its strongest demand in Italy, the natural core of Bersano’s market, and in major European countries such as Germany and Switzerland, thanks also to its versatility with food pairings. In recent years, its presence has grown in extra-European markets as well, with the United States and Canada at the forefront, and increasing interest from Asia—particularly China, Korea, and Japan—where it is appreciated as a cru of strong personality and authenticity.
From an organoleptic point of view, Barolo Badarina presents an intense red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it is broad, enveloping, and complex: notes of ripe red fruits and blackberry intertwine with spicy and balsamic hints, which evolve with aging into tones of underbrush, licorice, and tobacco. On the palate, it is structured, harmonious, and persistent, supported by dense yet elegant tannins, integrated with a vibrant freshness that ensures balance and longevity.
Badarina: a place of wine, culture and encounter
Wine tourism has long been part of Bersano’s identity. For over sixty years, the museums in Nizza Monferrato have preserved the rural and winegrowing heritage of Piedmont, with collections that tell the story of peasant life, the tools, and the arts that shaped wine as we know it today.
Until now, Cascina Badarina has been a private estate; with its opening to the public in autumn 2025, part of this heritage is brought into the heart of Barolo, offering experiences that combine tastings, convivial moments, and cultural discovery.
This is an important step for Bersano which, after decades of a strong presence in Monferrato, now brings its hospitality to the historic vineyards of the Langhe. “We want Badarina to become much more than a wine tourism destination – we see it as a living extension of our museum, a place where guests can taste a great cru where it’s born, and truly connect with its story. It’s not only about wine, but about learning, feeling, and becoming part of something that spans generations. For us, hospitality is a way to bring tradition to life – to share it, make it tangible, and offer an experience that stays with people.” adds Federico Orione.
Starting in September, visitors will be able to stop at Badarina for a tasting, enjoy a platter, and savour the beauty of the place, surrounded by vineyards and the light of the Langhe. Tastings are available without reservation, with the possibility to choose among selections of Barolo, Nizza, and Metodo Classico, wines by the glass, or direct purchases. The estate is also available for private events, designed for those seeking a special location for a memorable occasion. Cascina Badarina will be open Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
