High-Altitude Sangiovese and the Grammar of Place in Panzano
In the highest reaches of Chianti Classico, where the hills rise sharply above Panzano, Greve in Chianti, and the air thins just enough to slow the ripening of grapes, Montefili (link) stands as a high-altitude viticultural laboratory where ancient monastic terroir meets precise modern agronomy to push the absolute limits of pure Sangiovese. Vecchie Terre di Montefili (link) – for convenience, Montefili – occupies a privileged ridge between 480 and 550 metres, straddling the Panzano and Montefioralle UGAs and among the loftiest vineyard sites in the appellation. Here, Sangiovese does not shout. It speaks in precise, elegant phrases shaped by altitude, complex soils, and a philosophy that treats every parcel as a distinct individual.
