Together with the new Board of Directors, the aim is to continue to strengthen the common identity of regional oenology, while at the same time enhancing the individual territories.
Ortona, 29 April 2025: Alessandro Nicodemi has been re-elected as President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo (link), so we are proceeding in the wake of continuity.
‘I want to thank all the members of the Board of Directors for their renewed trust, it is an honour for me to take on this very important role for the second time and I am ready to take it on with the same commitment,’ said the president. ‘I can say I am satisfied with what has been achieved over the years, but I am extremely aware of the many challenges that await us, especially considering the very delicate historical moment that the sector is going through. ‘
When he was first elected in 2022, Nicodemi (link) was the first private producer to become president of the Consortium, marking an epoch-making change. Among the many objectives achieved, the most significant is certainly the introduction of the ‘Abruzzo Model’, a great novelty for the entire Italian wine world, with Abruzzo pioneering a new way of conceiving the organisation of designations of origin and PGIs, which is simpler and at the same time more detailed and more functional for promotion on international markets. In addition to this, a great deal has been invested in internationalisation – and the latest export figures show this – reaching € 290 million in 2024, with a significant leap forward (+15.47%) over 2023. He also pushed to make the world aware of the variegated excellence of Abruzzo wine-growing, not only Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, but also Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, which is currently the star of the scene, or the native whites starting with Pecorino.
‘My primary objective is to continue along the path I have started, enhancing the essence of Abruzzo grape varieties and working tirelessly to make our wines protagonists throughout the world. I will always be guided by listening, with a view to openness towards all producers and territories,‚ Nicodemi concludes.
Born in 1972, with a degree in Economics and Commerce and a past as an officer in the Guardia di Finanza, in 1997, following the untimely death of his father, Alessandro, assisted by his sister Elena, fully joined Fattoria Bruno Nicodemi, a family business and one of the most historic on the Abruzzi wine scene, present with its own brand since 1977, pioneering years for bottled regional wine. Nicodemi was vice-president of the Consortium for six years and in 2011 he was awarded ‘Benemerito della vitivinicoltura italiana’, for having made a decisive contribution to the development of viticulture and the enhancement of Italian oenology, receiving the prestigious Cangrande Medal. He also holds the position of regional representative within the National Federation of Vitiviniculture Products of Confagricoltura.
Joining him in this renewed role will be Vice-Presidents Lorenzo Di Ciano (Cantina Tollo) and Domenico Mastrogiovanni (Bio Cantina Orsogna), as well as the other members of the Board of Directors, elected during last week’s Assembly: Nicola Paolucci (Rinascita Lancianese), Vincenzo Bucci (Vinicola Villese), Miki Antonucci (Progresso Agricolo), Domenico Pasetti (Pasetti), Katia Masci (Valle Martello), Franco D’Eusanio (Chiusa Grande), Dino D’Ercole (Citra), Carlo Di Campli Finore (Viticoltori del Mediterraneo), Nicola Dragani (San Zefferino), Robertino La Monaca (Novaripa), Albino Lanci (Colle Moro) and Gennaro Matarazzo (Roxan).
The Consorzio Tutela Vini d’Abruzzo (Consortium for the Protection of Abruzzo Wines) was established in 2002 by decree of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to perform functions of protection, valorisation and general care of the interests connected with the appellations it protects. Today there are about 250 members, representing about 6000 producers of DOC and IGT grapes. The Consortium safeguards DOC and IGT wines: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Doc, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Doc, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Doc, Abruzzo Doc, Villamagna Doc, Controguerra Doc, Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Docg. Starting from the 2024 vintage, with the entry into force of the ‘Abruzzo Model’, all Igt wines will be united in the single Igt Terre d’Abruzzo.
