Cecchi showcases the winegrowing potential of the Maremma through an internationally styled Viognier and a Sangiovese rosé with a fine Tuscan identity.
Castellina in Chianti, April 16 2025 – Cecchi (link) continues its commitment to shining a spotlight on the Maremma, the area along Tuscany’s southern coast, with the launch of two new labels: Viognier “Caprifoglio” 2024 and Rosato “Calipte” 2024, made from Sangiovese grapes. Two stylistic interpretations that, through a dialogue between native and international varieties, highlight the unique soil and climate conditions of this territory and its increasingly recognized winemaking potential, both in Italy and abroad.
The Cecchi Family’s presence in Maremma runs deep, dating back to 1996 with the acquisition of the Val delle Rose estate at the heart of the Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Alongside a commitment to Sangiovese — the region’s signature grape — the family has long pursued an ambitious path of experimentation, seeking out varieties best suited to thrive in the area’s unique terroir.
Cecchi’s vineyards in Maremma are planted on loose, sandy soils of Quaternary origin, low in organic matter and with limited water retention. These conditions support balanced vine growth and yield. The bright, warm, and breezy coastal Mediterranean climate fosters optimal grape ripening, enhancing both the aromatic expression and the characteristic coastal salinity of the wines.
Within this distinct environment, Cecchi’s two new labels take shape: Calipte, a vibrant, delicately perfumed rosé crafted from Tuscany’s own Sangiovese, and Caprifoglio, an expressive Viognier that finds a perfect harmony between the international variety and its Maremman home.
Viognier “Caprifoglio” 2024 – Maremma Toscana DOC
Crafted from carefully selected Viognier grapes grown in the Val delle Rose vineyards, Caprifoglio (link) is Cecchi’s Mediterranean take on this internationally renowned variety. Fermented in stainless steel at a controlled temperature, the wine delivers a vibrant aromatic profile, led by floral and exotic fruit notes, supported by a balanced structure and marked salinity.
The name recalls one of the wine’s typical aromas — the scent of honeysuckle, a wildflower that grows spontaneously throughout the Maremma. The label design is inspired by the poetic overlap between this olfactory note and the presence of honeysuckle in the region. A botanical aesthetic—symbolic of simplicity, grace, and delicacy—visually represents Caprifoglio’s floral soul, emphasizing the deep connection between its cosmopolitan character and its native land.
Rosé “Calipte” 2024 – Toscana IGT
Calipte (link) is a Sangiovese-based rosé that captures the fresh, contemporary spirit of the Maremma. Vinified in stainless steel with short and frequent pump-overs to enhance the grape’s floral and fruity components, the wine shows a pale, bright pink hue and a bouquet rich in red berries and citrus, with a gentle floral nuance.
The name Calipte is inspired by the hummingbird (calypte in Greek), evoking the lightness and elegance of this wine, which stands out for its crisp freshness and easy-drinking appeal. The label design, inspired by the local floral landscape and printed directly onto the glass, introduces a new visual language for Cecchi – one aimed at a young, curious audience.
