For the first time, five designations of origin have come together to champion and promote the Monastrell variety.
Thanks to an initiative from the PDO Vinos Alicante, 4 Spanish designations of origin – Almansa, Bullas, Jumilla, Yecla -, and producers from other regions of the world – the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, California and Australia -, have joined forces to advocate the Monastrell variety by means of an international conference: “Monastrell Alicante, Mediterranean Spain”.
In the words of Antonio Miguel Navarro, the president of the PDO Vinos Alicante, “one of the biggest challenges in making this initiative a reality has been overcoming geographic and administrative boundaries”.
The aim of the conference is to advocate the Monastrell variety, a 100% Mediterranean grape, which in recent years has set the benchmark and become the cornerstone of winemaking in the areas where it is cultivated.
In this regard, the president of Vinos Alicante considers that “this initiative was necessary to champion a unique variety that is produced in various regions of the world, all of which have one thing in common: a Mediterranean climate. This aspect provides character and distinctiveness, allowing it an exclusive place on retail shelves with better known and more popular varieties and designations”.
This international conference will take place on 12 November in Alicante and various international figures from the world of wine will be participating.
